Gas services company E.ON U.S. (EON) has deployed a hosted fleet management system to track its equipment utilization. The company recently re-launched its AssetWorks FleetFocus Fleet Maintenance Management software in the vendor's ASP hosted services environment. EON is a diversified energy services company that owns and operates Louisville Gas and Electric Company, a regulated utility that serves 318,000 natural gas and 390,000 electric customers in Louisville, Ky., and 16 surrounding counties, and Kentucky Utilities Company, a regulated electric utility in Lexington, that serves 518,000 customers in 77 Kentucky counties and five counties in Virginia. The Transportation Services division of EON plans and coordinates the repair, maintenance, and refueling of a fleet of over 2,300 vehicles. EON has used the FleetFocus application from AssetWorks (the former Asset Solutions division of MAXIMUS) for 17 years. The Transportation Services division relied heavily on the system's ability to track equipment costs, utilization, fleet replacement, activity-based costs, comeback rate by technician, parent-child unit cost tracking and even employee performance. The system ran on EON's existing computer mainframe. When that mainframe was retired, the company began looking for a solution that would allow them to continue using the same fleet management software without disrupting their operations. The company selected AssetWorks' hosting services to help them maintain the application. "The primary reason that we chose the ASP plan was to allow us to get off of our mainframe so the company can retire it. The cost savings were achieved by reducing the need for internal IT support, in-house mainframe maintenance cost and all of the associated training expenses and learning curve," says Steve Ramser, contract manager at EON.
